Netherlands
The Dutch have a saying – “God made the Earth but the Dutch made Holland”. More than 2,400 kilometers of dikes surround the low lying land of the Netherlands. Reclaimed from the North Sea, almost half of this land lies below sea level. The Netherlands is the gateway to Northwestern Europe with Rotterdam home to the world’s largest and busiest general cargo port.
Otherwise known as Holland, the Netherlands is well known for its traditional windmills, tulips, cheese, clogs (wooden shoes), delftware, bicycles, dikes, tolerant attitude and flatness. Approximately half of Holland lies below sea level with a few mountains in the southeast.
With Amsterdam home to one of Europe’s leading airports and borders with Germany and Belgium, the Netherland’s is a perfect stop on anyone’s European holiday.

Travel Tips
With so many small villages to visit and enjoy, hiring a car and driving around Holland is the perfect way to see the countryside. The roads are well maintained and distances between villages & cities are relatively short, so you can see as much or as little as you like in your own time. The roads are toll free with the occasional toll at bridges & tunnels. If you’re game and want to take on Amsterdam, keep an eye out for trams & bicycle riders! Tip: Use public transport while in Amsterdam and collect your car when you’re ready to see the rest of the countryside.
